Why So Serious?

So in about a few weeks I will be graduating and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. I was thinking though about how there were some songs that basically summed up my entire college experience. I think we all have a few songs that could describe our college experience. Some songs remind us of the good times, some remind us of the bad, but each brings a back a particular memory that reminds me that I am still alive.

Freshman Year:
Party Hard: Andrew W.K.
I Still Remember: Bloc Party
Don't Stop Believing: Journey
The Impression I get: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
In the club: 50 Cent

Sophmore Year:
Dig: Incubus
Crazy: Gnarls Barkley
Maybe Someday: Black Stone Cherry
That song from Boondock Saints
Un Anee Sans Luminare: Arcade Fire

Junior Year:
Told ya : Soulja Boy
Clothes Off!: Gym Class Heroes
Sexual Erruption: Snoop Dog
Think: Puddle of Mudd

Senior Year:
Shipping off to Boston: Dropkick Murphys
The Payback: James Brown
Mercury: Bloc Party
Loaded To the Gills: Miichael Higgins

On a lighter note: Check out www.wwtdd.com I hate celebrities and even worse celebrity gossip... but what would Tyler Durden do does it in such a such a way.. he's got style and finesse and occasionally post nude pics of some hot chicks. Also I like messing around with the people who post on comingsoon.net. look out for comments by "Jack Napier" till next week...

LIKE THIS BAND

Okay, so maybe I’m not qualified enough in life to tell you loyal readers to do anything, but if you want to listen to me, take this advice: listen to Passion Pit. I could never pick one specific genre as my favorite, so needless to say my tastes are pretty broad. That being said, I think that Passion Pit is SO GREAT that everyone can love them. And you should. You should show this band some serious love.

Passion Pit is a five-member kick ass band from Cambridge, Massachusetts (which is also the home state of two members of the SMH so, like, you know its good) and their official website is none other than Myspace music. Needless to say, they are an up-and-coming band that is quickly gaining steam, especially over the Internet. Under “influences,” they list “our friends,” and under “sounds like,” they posted a picture of the Jeffersons. That speaks for itself. Anyways, the five members, led by founder Michael Angelakos, formed at Emerson College in Boston. In September 2008, they released their first EP, titled “Chunk of Change.” The six songs on the EP are all different yet they blend together and you could listen to all 30 minutes over and over again (and I have, and it still sounds good.) But enough for the poorly written background story (It’s hard for me to think because I just drank a smoothie and my brain hurts). As I was saying, you should, nay; you NEED to show this band some love. Lucky for those of you in the Syracuse/Greater Syracuse area, none other than Passion Pit is opening for Ra Ra Riot on March 28 at 9pm at the Westcott Theater! Tickets are only $12 (plus an under-21 $3 surcharge at the door) so there isn’t really an excuse NOT to go. Even if you can’t spare the chunk of change (pun intended), you should check out songs on last.fm, which streams for free, or on their Myspace page. Up until about last week (when I was supposed to be writing this blog entry, oops) their most popular song, “Sleepyhead,” was available for free on iTunes. However, its only $7 for the whole CD, so get it anyways. If I had to pick one song, well, it’s hard, but I GUESS I’d go with “Better Things.” It’s 99 cents. Just test it out. If you don’t like it, then call into the Saturday Morning Hangover on Saturday mornings and complain about it (315-443-1278)!

As I mentioned, Ra Ra Riot is in fact playing at the Westcott on March 28. I have to admit, I was not immediately taken aback by their sound when I heard them at Juice Jam, but a friend from home recommended them to me, so I gave them another shot. I judged too quickly. They’re good. And you know they’re good if they are opening for the likes of The Cold War Kids (listen if you don’t know them, they just came out with a new album), Vampire Weekend (again, good shit), and Death Cab For Cutie (like, come on, everyone loves them). The little band that could coming out of Syracuse, New York, RRR has been traveling all over the country since the end of January, giving you plenty of chances to see them. So again, Ra Ra Riot is playing on the 28th of March. Passion Pit, Cut off Your Hands, and Funk n’ Waffles Sophistafunk are opening. A whole lot of good music in one place on one night. Howe could you pass that up?

Also, a shameless self-promotion: check out/join the group/become a fan of The Saturday Morning Hangover on Facebook. Our mindless (but not really) jabber is the only thing that really helps that hangover. 10am-1pm LISTEN IN!

Thursday Update

Hey everyone

Just posting again before The Pregame Show. We're going to have some great music going to party to so break out the booze and boogie on down with WERW tonight from 10p-1a!!

I guess I should also warn everyone that the new U2 album is a huge disappointment. The lyrics are uninspired and the beats are basic. I may be the only person who actually cares about lyrics but in my mind any song that has the word cockatoo in it should not be on the album.

I hope everyone has a great break see you soon!

FRIDEEE UPDATE

So I'm supposed to post on this blog about something so I guess I'll just support my friends.

Sat Feb 28th, go to the Jab and check out my co-host and his comedic stylings at the WOO HOO comedy hour at the Jab, probably about 8pm... don't quote me on that.

Support my buddy booch and his band endive by visiting their website www.endivenation.com

If you haven't checked out this site, you definitely should because www.fmylife.com is probably the best website ever. Here's a sample:

Today, I walked home from a guy's dorm early in the morning, still wearing my dress and heels from the night before. I walked by a mother and her little daughter, who said "Mommy, why is she so dressed up so early in the morning?" and the mom replied "Because honey, she makes bad decisions." FML

And Since I'm a plug whore, you can check my show out every Friday from 1 PM to 4 PM

Till next week,

THURSDAY UPDATE

Hey everyone

This is DJ Jonny G checking in on Thursday before my show. I've got some great stuff coming your way including live music by the Northbound Traveling Jug Band and a special guest.

On the show I'll be playing a bunch of new music including the new U2, some new stuff from local entrepreneur Ulf Oesterle's Aux Records, and some new stuff out of the U.K.

I guess that's it for now,
ENJOY THE SHOW!!!

I just got a bundle of joy from E*rock at audiodregs. It's a great label and if would like to learn more than check'em out here = http://www.audiodregs.com/main.html. minotaur shock, lineland, dim dim, and melodium have all recently been added to the library. Some other bands to check out on the label are lulla tone, f.s. blumm (awesome), and some of E's other crazy visual shit.

New Discovery: FERRIS WHEEL

Heyo!

Well, this actually isn't much of a new discovery. This band has been around for quite some time now (if you count a year as being "quite some time"). Who are they? What are they? They're Ferris Wheel, a Boston-based, every possible genre band (mainly indie pop/folk rock) that appeals to almost everyone. Not yet have we encountered someone who doesn't like dey style. Yea, dey style. Their style, if you will.

Picture, if you can, a seven member band, high atop a teeny stage in Boston playing their way to the top. 6 guys, 1 girl. They've actually often been compared to the likes of Rilo Kiley, and their popularity has risen immensely over the past few months, with the release of their debut EP, "Goody Twos."

Please, check these guys out - they're absolutely amazing. But don't take my word for it, listen yourself! They're streaming on both Facebook and Myspace, and their EP is available to purchase online for only $5. Well worth it; I've bought 6 already (for future b-day prezzies, obv!).
